Groups STEM Mentoring Program
The Groups STEM Mentoring Program (GSMP) occurs during the fall and spring of the academic year connecting current scholars majoring in STEM disciplines to mentors in the same or similar area of study. Mentors bring out the positive and potential inherent in mentees through support, appropriate advice, and encouragement, which may include sharing stories about past academic and career experiences when relevant and valuable, as well as referring the mentee to outside resources when necessary. Mentees need to learn about the nature of research, graduate school, graduate school preparation, and internship or research opportunities. In addition, receiving tips on issues such as study skills, motivation, leadership skills, time management, diversity issues, and work/life balance issues is helpful. Mentors and mentees communicate as often as possible and engage in a level of minimum participation for the mentoring relationship to be effective.
